Abstract:

Located in the coastal plain, the agglomeration of Pointe-Noire, the economic capital of the Republic of Congo, is highly exposed to the effects of global climate change and urbanisation. The objective of this article is to analyse vulnerability and resilience at the neighbourhood level in the agglomeration of Pointe-Noire. Data from surveys conducted in the neighbourhoods of Kilomètre 4 in the city centre, Ngouaboussi and Tchiali in the periphery were analysed using Phynx software. The main results show that the climate of Pointe-Noire is marked by a very recent recession in rainfall totals and a decrease in rainy days. This climatic environment generates numerous extreme phenomena, the most cited being flooding, erosion and silting. They are aggravated by accelerated and uncontrolled urbanisation, poorly thought-out development and bad land management policies. Several strategies have been put in place by individual populations to adapt. Unfortunately, they remain ineffective and ephemeral.
